This online tone generator plays a tone at 220 Hertz (Hz) when the "Start" button is clicked.
You can change the frequency of the tone by moving the slider or entering your desired frequency into the text box above. Humans can typically hear sounds in the 20 Hz to 20 kHz range, although adults tend to lose their ability to hear sounds past 15 kHz. Babies can actually hear frequencies that are slightly higher than 20 kHz.1.
Other animals have a wider range of hearing. Dogs for example can hear from 67 to 45,000 Hz and cats can hear from 45 to 64,000 Hz. Beluga whales have some of the best hearing and can hear frequencies up to 123,000 Hz.2
How to Use the Tone Generator
Using the tone generator is easy. Move the slider above to the desired frequency of sound or enter a frequency into the text box. Pick a wave type and then click "Start" to play the tone. Click the "Stop" button to stop the tone. Download a sample file of the tone by clicking "Save Tone."
You can select from the following wave types:
Sine Wave: Smooth, periodic oscillation. Contains only the fundamental frequency, without harmonics.
Square Wave: Abrupt transitions between maximum and minimum amplitude. Contains the fundamental frequency and odd harmonics, producing a richer sound.
Triangle Wave: Linear change between maximum and minimum values. Contains only odd harmonics, resulting in a softer sound than the square wave.
Sawtooth Wave: Rises or falls linearly, then abruptly shifts. Contains both even and odd harmonics, giving it a bright, harsh sound.
